Lucrecia's Journal

After they cleared the keep, the party rested and read the Journal kept by Lucrecia.

Lamashan 19

Today I got word from Mokmurian that Xanesha was killed by a group of humans. She must have gotten really sloppy for them to even get a chance at killing her. He says they are leaving Magnimar, with a pair of Black Arrow Rangers, to come investigate the area so the timeline for our plans needs to be moved up.

Lamashan 22

Finally after being in this back water town for more than two years, the barge will sink tonight during a “special” members only party. I had Kaven over last night and set in motion Rannick’s fall next week. Jaagrath Kreeg secured the help from the Grauls yesterday as well, although I would consider the price he had to pay Mammy too high. Barl Breakbones must really be ruling the Kreegs with a “stone” fist to force Jaagrath to do that!

I am not looking forward to the next few days after I “die” since all I will be doing is laying low and waiting for the next phase to begin.

Lamashan 28

These Kreeg Ogres drive me crazy, they are filthy and crude! At least I got to claim the dungeon and have it decorated to my standards. I know Mokmurian is using them to further our Master’s goals, but I wish there was some other way to do it. Mokmurian was even mocking me about it when he was contacting me about the humans coming into Turtleback Ferry tomorrow. Too bad for them they will be too late to save it.

Lamashan 30

Blast those lazy Kreegs! Because they couldn’t handle a few trolls at Skull’s Crossing they fell behind schedule and now those humans lowered the build up of water today. Drowning the town is a little more sophisticated than other more direct methods, but one way or another Turtleback Ferry’s citizens will be dead.

Mokmurian says they will be heading to the fort tomorrow. I wonder who his spy is in that group giving him information. I guess I should be more concerned with who is the spy here giving him information on what I am doing. Either way, the dungeon here is the most secure place, and even if they could wade through all the Kreeg Ogres, by the time they get to me they will be ripe for the picking.

Neth 1

Tirana arrived today with Asheia, the final sword. The secret tunnel to the ancient Council of Truth stronghold was found in the crypt. Apparently she has most of the schematics to avoid its security protections. Once she reaches the Awakening Altar all Seven Swords of Sin will available. I will receive Baraket only after they finish Chellan, of course.

Session 28 - Reclaiming Fort Rannick

Fireday Neth 2 around 2 PM

Heading up the stairs the group entered the first floor and heard sounds of ogres coming from various areas of the Fort. Despite the loud noises, they decided to sneak quietly upstairs and see if they could find Lamatar Bayden, their commander in his rooms. While they passed what once was the infirmary, the ogre inside somehow heard them pass and flung opent he door and attacked. The group was split, but everyone was ready for a fight and quickly dispatched the monster. Inside the infirmary, they found that the ogre was posing dead bodies as a form of "art".

Heading up the stairs nearby, they approached the commander's quarters. The chapel door flew open and very large Kreeg ogre, the ogre known as Jaagrath, the leader of the Kreegs. As they started to fight him, the Commander's door opened and another Kreeg ogre started flinging lightning bolts down the hallway. Vale took both a viscious hit from Jaagrath's ogre hook, but also was hit by a lightning bolt killing him. Orik went to keep the caster busy, while the rest of the group took out Jaagrath. Eventually both went down, but group was heavily damaged. Knowing there was time to rest as the keep was filled with ogres, they pushed on.

They made sure the upper areas were cleared, and had Preacher, Shalelu and Jakardros up in the tower keeping lookout. The rest of the party collected some of the ogre bodies and animated them as zombies. They cleared out the rest of the keep using the Kreeg leaders.

Session 27 - To Fort Rannick

Oathday Neth 1 around 2PM

Heading down to the basement the group found where the human flesh furniture was being made. Exploring further they came across a half-ogre with an injured leg that had a vestigial twin growing out the back of his neck. Vale was injured and dropped unconscious with a vicious blow of an ogre hook. Preacher healed him while the group took him out.

Exploring the basement further they came across a huge plant creature that once was a Graul. Both Preacher and Vale were swallowed while the rest of the group hacked at it. Eventually Vale killed it from the inside. They found the Rangers' equipment and the rest of the Graul "fortune".

Clearing out the upstairs, they found the attic and the Graul boy's rooms.

Once they made sure all the Graul's were dead and there wear no other Black Arrow survivors, they torched the place and everything inside it.

Moving some distance from the farmstead they made camp and rested for the night.

Fireday Neth 2 around 8AM

The Black Arrow rangers were in better condition after healing, food and a good night's rest. They headed out and scouted Fort Rannick and discovered it had been completely over run by the Kreeg Ogres. While forming attack plans, Phain noticed Kaven looking guilty and pressed him for information. Kaven admitted he was sneaking out of Fort Rannick to gamble at the Paradise Barge before it sank, and was in love with Lucrecia the owner. She had asked him to take a force out to scout the Kreeg's which lead to the Kreeg taking Fort Rannick. The party allowed him to live since they needed all the help they could get.

They decided to sneak into the main Fort by a secret tunnel. They brought a special kind of wood to burn as the smell of it drives away the protectors of the tunnel, Shocker Lizards.

Opening the secret door to the Fort, they were greeted by a beautiful red headed woman that Kraven identified as Lucrecia. Phain attacked but she was quicker and blocked the door. Vale took a series of vicious hits as he pushed past her. Preacher healed him taking some heavy blows as well. Eventually the party overpowered her and finally killed her. The sister to Xanesha, and organizer of all the death and destruction in the area was dead!

Session 26 - Mammy Dearest

Oathday Neth 1 around 1PM

The prisoners they freed were three Order of the Black Arrow rangers. One was Shelelu who had recently joined when she took a trip with the druid out to this region to look for her father Jakardos another one of the prisoners. The third prisoner was Kaven. The Black Arrows were captured when returning to Fort Rannick after taking a scouting party to the Kreeg Ogres to see what they were up to. They found out that a war party had somehow circled around them and had attacked Fort Rannick. The Grauls attacked their group by surprise and killed or captured them. Luckily Jakardos's bear companion Kibb escaped. The Grauls are normally not that brave against a group that large so it was strange to be attacked.

The party decided to bust down the door and end the threat of the Grauls once and for all. Phain approached the front door cautiously and found it was trapped, but when attempting to disarm it, set it off but was unharmed. Entering the house, they came to the family room, which had furniture made out of skin and all sorts of trophies. Khazen almost fell into a pit trap but jumped to safety before he fell in.

Heading down a hallway, they came to horrible smelling room with a grotesquely overweight half-ogre, Mammy. A spell caster she was floating the air while casting spells draining the life from them while boosting hers. Khazen recognized the spell and cast a Dispel Magic, robbing her of the life she had stolen. Soon the group dispatched her.

Checking out the rest of the house, they came to a "playroom" with two full grown half-ogre mutants. Despite their children decorations, they two half-ogres were dangerous and attacked so the party killed them off.

Session 25 - Here Comes the Grauls!

Oathday Neth 1 around 6AM

The party woke up in the morning and headed out for Fort Rannick. The followed some switchback trails and were on the edges of the forest when they heard some noises, like a wounded animal. Xantumal went to investigate.

They found a bear stuck in a bear trap. Khazen recognized it as Jakardos's animal companion. Jakardos was second in command of the Black Arrows. Xantumal cast a spell and talked with the bear. His master was taken by the weird ones and told him that dogs were coming. The group set up an ambush and killed off the dogs right before a half-ogre mutant stumbled into the clearing. The half ogre was carrying a spear and as the party decended upon him, the ogre started to break down and cry. Seems he was upset they killed his dogs. They party took all of his items, including his blanket with bloodstained Black Arrows patches. They found out that he has a Mammy and brother-fathers and sister-mothers. After they were done asking him questions, Orik put him out of his misery.

They moved toward the Graul farmstead. They got there about an hour later and was attacked by another half-ogre. This one had an ogre hook and one side of his head resembled a pumpkin, a huge puffy mass of tumors and overgrown bone giving his head a lopsided look. The group had no problem taking him out, but not before he raised the alarm by yelling. Nothing came out of the house or barn though.

They decided to head to the barn first. The bear felt that his master was inside. They opened the door and saw three more half-ogres, one with a vesitgal arm, one with overlarge milky eyes, and a third with rippling skin. Khazen cast a fireball and killed all three before they could even make a move.

Inside the barn there was a large double door barricaded from their side, and two walkways leading up to doors on the north and south side of the barn. Checking out the doors, it lead to another room filled with spider webs. On the corners of the walkways were cages, and there were three people in them, all rangers. Moving to investigate, the group was attacked by a huge spider. Throwing open the large door, Khazen, Xantumal and Phain cast some spells, while Orik used his bow. Vale took Xantumal's long spear. Vale was bit and succumbed to poison, but otherwise they made it out unscathed.

The group freed the prisoners, got them outside, then burned down the whole barn.

Session 24 - Inside Skull's Crossing

Wealday Lamashan 30 around 4PM

There were two entrances into the Dam, one was damage and had been repaired and both were barred from the inside. They decided to go to the one that hadn't been damaged. Phain used the gauntlet's power to Stone Shape and warped the door enough to get the bar off the inside. The started to investigate inside and found one room crumbling away and most of the room overgrowing with some sort of viney moss. In the main room they were ambushed by trolls. Using their knowledge of trolls, they used fire to combat their regeneration and defeated them with some injuries. Preacher healed them up with some channels and they headed down the stairs which had writing in giant saying “BELOW DWELLS WET PAPA GRAZUUL! ALL HAIL WET PAPA GRAZUUL!”

Heading down the stairs cautiously, it lead to a room with a large pool of water. Xantumal conjured a water elemental and it was quickly killed by Papa Grazuul, a water troll. Phain used an acid arrow to combat its regeneration and they defeated the scrag before it could hurt them too much.

They found the control room on the level and it contained to circular rune, one containing a devil, and the other containing a pile of ash. Khazen used comprehend languages and spoke with the devil. It was almost dead, but told them information on promise to be released. The dam used life energy to function, and the other devil had succumed to the drain about 50 years before, the last time the dam was needed. Xantumal summoned another elemental into the other rune and it killed the devil, but lowered the water level.

Having aborted catastrophy in the area, the party decided to find a place to rest, then head to Fort Rannick in the morning.

Session 23 - To Turtleback Ferry

Fireday Lamashan 18 around 6PM

A dwarf dressed in deep green with a patch that had a fist clutching three arrows approached Phain. He introduced himself as Khazen Dren, a ranger belonging to the Order of the Black Arrows, a group of rangers located at Fort Rannick and charged with protecting the area around it and Turtleback Ferry. He just arrived in Magnimar to request more people to be assigned to Fort Rannick as the activity of the Kreeg ogres have increased. When he heard Phain talking about evil coming to Fort Rannick, it caught his attention.

After exchanging some information they parted ways.

Starday Lamashan 19 around 9am

The day started out with some shopping at the Golemworks. They sold off their extra magic item and spent their money on some upgrades. When they returned to their townhouse they had a message from the Mayor requesting their presence. They headed out to see the mayor and were surprised to see Khazen there. The mayor wasn't convinced that it was as dire as the rangers were saying and decided he would send their group as his assessors to determine the situation there. Phain wanted a parade and the mayor suggested the parade's grandeur would be determined on how much he would have to spend on sending troops to Fort Rannick.

Khazen was also with another ranger from Fort Rannick called Vale. They were all taking the boat back on Wealday. Phain decided to take a trip to Sandpoint and visit his wife before leaving. He hired some guards for his estate as well as some more help.

Wealday Lamashan 23 around 6AM

The boat leaving for Turtleback Ferry left Magnimar starting a week long trip. Phain spent most of his trip studying the Black Tome found at the Runelord of Sloth's seal.

Toilday Lamashan 29 around 6PM

After a week of travel the group finally arrived at Turtleback Ferry. The weather was turning colder and the rains were constant. Turtleback Ferry had earned its name from three ferries made of the shells of giant snapping turtles that had been slain by the town’s founder, a powerful fighter named Autek Lavendy, a hundred years ago. Since it was late they decided to stay at an inn before heading to Fort Rannick.

Phain was looking a little pale after leaving the boat, though he said he felt fine, just too much time under the deck. The party kept hearing stories about the Paradise, a gambling barge that sank a few days before. People would come from all over to gamble there. Everyone on board was presumed dead, including the owner, a woman named Lucrecia. The party had heard that name from Xanesha's letter. Preacher also noticed that the serving woman had the Sihedron rune tattooed on her shoulder. She said if you paid extra you could get a VIP pass at the Paradise. When asked how many people on board had that tattoo, she said all of them would as it was a special party for VIPs that night.

Wealday Lamashan 30 around 9AM

The group woke up and was having breakfast whent hey heard a commotion outside. The lake had started to overflow from all the rain and was rushing into the town. Khazen saved a little girl from being swept away by the current and was attacked by a river snake. Soon after a larger creature of legend swept into town. The party fought against it, but it was too powerful. It soon got bored and swam away. The water was receding a little. The mayor suggested to go to Skull's Crossing, a Thassilonian monument that regulated the level of water in the area. For water reason it wasn't working but it was infested with monsters. Khazen said he would check it out on the way to Fort Rannick.

The group headed out on some trails that Khazen and Vale knew. They approached Skull's Crossing and saw a section had broken away spilling water into Claybottom lake. The group climbed up the Stairway of Skulls, giant steps leading up to a cave.
Inside the cave was an Ettin that the party managed to dispatch, despite being separated by a 15 foot ledge.

That cave lead out to the top of Skull's Crossing, where the water level was at the top of the dam. Looking out they saw a group of ogres taking pick axes to the dam trying to break it. They were only chipping away at it, but seemed to be making some progress. The group attacked, Khazen sending off a fireball at the ogres chipping away at the wall, while Phain and the others attacked the leader. Vale fell in the water while moving up to attack and the ogre leader sensed an easy target and attacked him causing him to fall unconscious. The rest of the group took him out before he could do any more damage.

Preacher healed Vale and Khazen noticed they were Kreeg ogres, one of the more powerful ogre clans in the area, and the reason he had travelled to Magnimar.

Interlude - Part 2

So ends the Second part of the "Rise of the Runelords" adventure path called "Skinsaw Murders". James Paladin Budwar has died and James will be playing a new character, a dwarven Eldritch Knight that belong to the "Order of the Black Arrows", a ranger group that protect a remote area from Ogres and Giants. His background will have a huge part in the next chapter, "Hook Mountain Massacre"

The party is now 7th or 8th level:

Xantumal - 7th Level Druid of Gozreh
Preacher - 7th Level Cleric of Pharasma
Phain - 4th Level Sorcerer/ 4th Level Rogue
Khazen Dren - 1st Level Ranger/5th Level Wizard/2nd Level Eldritch Knight

The group found a journal in Ironbriar's office:

Ironbriar used his position as Justice to cover up the Cult of Norgorber's murders as well as give them inside information on what the authorities were doing. His journal makes it clear enough that someone he refers to as the “Wanton of Nature’s Pagan Forms” has stolen his heart and provided him with a new method of murder, the Sihedron ritual. He involved Aldern in the ritual after he turned undead.

The ledger also indicates that Ironbriar has received payment from a group called the Red Mantis for delivery of “Vorel’s Legacy”, a fungus that was harvested from Foxglove Manor which was sent to the sinister group of assassins based in Cheliax.

They also found a note in the clock tower:

My dearest Xanesha!

I am so proud of what you are doing in Magnimar, with your band of murderers bringing souls to our Lord, fueling his awakening! Soon enough, Magnimar will be a much nicer place, with all of its greed sucked dry.

My plans are proceeding nicely up here in Turtleback Ferry. You wouldn’t think that greed could take a foothold in such a desolate area, but when you provide people with just a bit of hope for a better life, it is amazing how their greed rises to the top.

The only obstacle to my plans is Fort Rannick, but that will be taken care of shortly. Then nothing will stand in the way of our Lord coming back to life!

Soon, we shall be reunited and our Lord will begin his glorious reign over all of Golarion!

Session 22 - Attacking the Clock Tower

Fireday Lamashan 18 around 10am

Both Budwar and Preacher had dreadful dreams of their groups death at the hands of whomever ruled the clock tower. Preacher had a sense that Pharasma wasn't ready for him yet, he still needed to find out the cause of so many souls not reaching her. Budwar knew that planning and strategy would be the key to winning the battle.

Approaching the tower with care, they saw it was in poor condition. A hole about 200 feet up had a rickety scaffolding built to another higher hole. They entered the clock tower and inside was some damage rooms with an unstable staircase winding its way up. They inspected the staircase and made sure to spread out to avoid having too much weight in one place.

About halfway up, they heard a bell fall and everyone scrambled to get out of the way, but Phain, who was walking on the wall with his boots, could not avoid it and got clipped by it. Seeing 3 more bells above, they decided to get out of the tower and come up with a new plan.

The new dwarven scholar cast enlarge and spider climb, and had the other carried up to the top. In the uppermost room was a silk bed and other out of place comforts. Suddenly a demon appeared, but Phain recognized it as an illusion. Phain also found a spot with a silence on it and dispelled it. Suddenly, a snake like creature appeared in the air and a strange snake like mask with green glowing eyes shot something at Preacher, but he wasn't affected. The group summoned some monsters and the enlarged fighters attacked. Niorg used the wand and dispelled the flying while the rest of the group hammered her down. She used a large spear, and when it hit it made a wailing sound, but on her third hit on the paladin, she killed him and the spear wailed even louder. Everyone, shocked but the death of the paladin rallied and killed her.

The group found a bunch of papers containing names of people targetted for the "Sihedron Ritual", including the Lord Mayor. Also they found a note from Xanesha's sister with more information.

Heading back to the Lord Mayor's house, they informed him that he was targeted for assassination, he offered the party 6,000gp each for their role in making Magnimar safe, as well as officially giving them the Aldern townhouse.

Going back to the church of Torag to raise the Paladin from the dead, they clerics informed them that Budwar's soul was not willing to return as he died gloriously saving the lives of his companions. Phain made an impassioned speech to get the cleric to convince Budwar's soul to be willing, but with no luck. Little did Phain and the rest know that there was another that overheard him....

Session 21 - Assault on the Seven's Sawmill

Toilday Lamashan 15 around 8pm

After scouting out the sawmill for another day, the group sent the druid in to scout. Turning into a mouse, he snuck in and observed a bunch of the workers in cultists masks. The group now knew that the workers were in on the murders.

Leaving Hogie outside to guard the basement door, the group stormed in. As they moved up the floors they killed off all the cultists they found. Budwar and Orik reached the top floor where there were more cultists, their leader, and a flesh golem that looked like a scarecrow carrying a scythe. Orik charged into the frey and took heavy damage from the scarecrow. As he backed off, Preacher came in and healed him while Budwar tried to make his way to the leader. Preacher took a heavy hit from the scarecrow and fell unconscious. Xantumal him fall and rushed to his aid but also took a fatal hit from the scarecrow. Orik fell victim to a spell from the leader and ran down the stairs. Budwar healed Preacher and went to battle with the Scarecrow. Phain managed to get behind the battle to challenge the leader. The leader cast a spell and disappeared, but Phain was ready with a scroll that made him reappear. The leader used his strange mask powers to try and confuse Phain, but Phain shook off the effects and killed him. Budwar and Preacher managed to kill the Scarecrow.

Unmasking the leader they found out it was Justice Ironbriar. They found a journal of his that was in code. They decided to get the Lord Mayor involved so he would know that Ironbriar was corrupt and so they wouldn't get blamed for his death. They put his head into the interrogation cage and found out some information on the cult. They also found out that he was taking order from some woman in a clock tower.

Wealday Lamashan 16 around 6am

After having the Magnimar guard secure the sawmill, they searched it thoroughly. They found a rookery with 3 crows in it. Knowing it could be a clue to finding the clock tower, they fed the birds and went to the church of Torag to see about bring their friend back to life. The spell to bring him back would be expensive, as was the spells needed to restore some of the abilities he would lose, but they pooled enough money to do it.

Wealday Lamashan 16 around 11am

That day the druid talked to the birds and they knew the location to the clock tower. With the promise of more food when they got back, the druid shap shifted into a raven and followed the bird finding out where the clock tower was exactly.

When they were able to, they asked more questions of the head and found that he was wary of his mistress and his a wand of dispel magic as she would have many spells active on her at any one time.

Later in the day, a dwarf appeared. His name was Niorg and was a scholar of Torag and had spent the last few days inspecting the seal. He was assigned by the church of Torag to help Budwar in whatever he needed.

The group decided to assult the clock tower the next day, and got some rest.

Session 20 - In Search of the Brothers of the Seven

Fireday Lamashan 11 around 10am

After getting away from the diseased area around the Misgivings, the group rested. Then they decided to head to Magnimar to identify and sell some of the items they had acquired, and then to follow up on the clues they had found.

They arrived in the city later in the day and decided to find an inn and take a much needed rest. They checked into the same inn they stayed at the first time in Magnimar and had a large dinner, bathed and slept.

Starday Lamashan 12 around 8am

After a good breakfast, they headed out to the Golemworks to sell off some of their magic items they didn't need and then maybe purchase some they wanted. They also checked in with Justice Ironbriar. An addition murder had taken place the other night, so they knew it couldn't have only been Aldern killing people. Armor they had found at the Misgivings was owned by a bandit wanted in town so they turned it in as evidence and collected the reward.

Sunday Lamashan 13 around 8am

The party decided to check out Aldern's townhouse. The got directions and travelled to the house. Phain used the Hat of Disguise they found to look a little more like Aldern in case anyone got suspicious. They used the key they found and went inside. Hogie was too big to fit so he stayed outside.

When they got inside, there was a butler that greeted Aldern but was confused as he thought that he was in the other room with his wife. The butler went and got the other Aldern and Iesha, his wife. Everyone was very confused, Aldern because someone was in his house disguised as him, and the party as they had killed Aldern. They decided to move into the study and talk with Aldern alone to try and figure out what happened. Xantumal stayed outside with Hogie.

While describing what happened at the Misgivings, Phain, Budwar and Orik was surprised by the butler and Iesha. They attacked Phain wounding him greatly, then after they hit him they changed into a vaguely humanoid featureless form. Budwar attacked the one nearest him, drawing its attention away from Phain, but the other one knocked Phain unconscious as well as what was Aldern attacking as well. Budwar called upon Torag to smite these creatures while healing Phain. Orik and Budwar battled the monsters while Phain retreated and used some ranged spells. Xantumal heard the battle from outside the house and broke down the locked door to come in and help. At the end of the battle Orik was knocked unconscious as well but Budwar felled the last one and healed him back to health.

They party got the door fixed and searched the house and found a hidden compartment in the fireplace mantle. In it were the deeds to the Misgivings as well as the townhouse. Also there were notes that Aldern was to drop off payments for his debt every week to the Seven's Sawmill.

Moonday Lamashan 14 around 8am

Asking around town, they found the location of the sawmill, and staked it out. They spent most of the day watching the business noticing that the traffic going in and out looked legitimate. Phain climbed up the outside of the building with his spider climb boots, but noticed no windows to enter and view inside, and no weakness in the roof.

The party decided they could wait another day and come up with the a plan to break in, since they did not know whether or not the workers would be part of the "Brothers of the Seven" or clueless of who they work for.

Session 19 - The Misgivings Conclusion

Fireday Lamashan 11 around 2am

Entering the basement area the party was attacked by a swarm of rats. After dispatching them, the checked out the basement level and found a old winding staircase leading down, it appeared to have been under the floor and someone with a pick axe broke it open. Going down the stairs they were in an older cave system. Assuming that the passageway in the well lead to this level, Phain wanted to seal it up to prevent anyone from escaping, so the group went outside.

Around the well now were thousands of undead birds. They attacked in swarms, surrounding everyone. Budwar and Preacher used their channeling ability to kill off the birds, but everyone still took injuries. Running low on spells they wanted to rest, but felt there was no way they could successfully sleep anywhere near the house, so they kept going.

In the tunnels they found a transformed bat ghoul and some other undead. Using up what resources they had to kill them. Also there was another room with stain glass windows that matched ones from upstairs. The other ones showed a seven sided box, various creatures and items being released or maybe even sucked into it. This one showed a man that looked like one of the Foxgloves becoming a lich. From the paintings and visions they had seen they were sure it was Vorel Foxglove, Aldern's grandfather.

Finally they came to a bowl shaped room with a damp circular ramp leading down into a small pool of water and a door. Phain used his boots to successfully walk to the door and opened it revealing a passageway. He worked with Budwar to setup a rope and Xantumal used Stoneshape to make a small rail to hang onto. Orik went first and made it across, Preacher started to go next when Orik was attacked by what was once Aldern, now he was some sort of Dread Ghoul now known as the Skinsaw Man. Orik was hurt badly and paralyzed. Phain went to his aid but soon was paralyzed as well.

The battle position was in Aldern's as outside the hall was slick. Budwar made to over a pushed Orik out of the way while Preacher got Phain out of the way. Using his Smite ability he gravely injured . Aldern but then succumed to Aldern's paralyzing touch. Orik had recovered by then, but Preacher managed to finish him off, ending the murder spree of the Skinsaw Man.

Searching through his things, they discovered some useful information. Aldern had fallen in debt and borrowed money from a group called the Brotherhood of the Seven. Unable to pay it back, he made a bargain with them to collect some mold from his estates in exchange for being even. So he returned to his family's abandoned estates but succumbed to the disease and madness of the place. He successfully paid off his debt, but didn't survive the disease.

They also found a note saying:

Aldern—
You have served us quite well. The delivery you harvested from the caverns far exceeds what I had hoped for. You may consider your debt to the Brothers paid in full. Yet I still have need of you, and when you awaken from your death, you should find your mind clear and able to understand this task more than in the state you lie in as I write this.

You shall remember the workings of the Sihedron ritual, I trust. You seemed quite lucid at the time, but if you find after your rebirth that you have forgotten, return to your townhouse in Magnimar. My agents shall contact you there soon—no need for you to bother the Brothers further. I will provide the list of proper victims for the Sihedron ritual in two days’ time. Commit that list to memory and then destroy it before you begin your work. The ones I have selected must be marked before they die, otherwise they do my master no good and the greed in their souls will go to waste.

If others get in your way, though, you may do with them as you please. Eat them, savage them, or turn them into pawns—it matters not to me.
—Your Mistress, Wanton of Nature’s Pagan Forms

They also found a key to his townhouse in Magnimar. They group decided to head there next to both check out his place, and to identify and sell some of the magical items they have found.

Also there was a patch of mold that occasionally resembled a human face. It was by what appeared to be the broken remains of the phylactery they saw on the stained glass windows. They smashed the pieces of the phylactery into dust and burned off the mold, but Budwar still sensed that the evil was not destroyed, and it seemed like maybe even the mold was growing back.

Session 18 - A Wedding and Misgivings

Wealday Lamashan 9 around Noon

Returning to Sandpoint, the group received some bad news. Another murder occured and it was Vin Vinder, Phain's fiancee's father. Consoling Shayless, she revealed two things to him, that she was pregnant with his child and that if they got married that day, the family would look to him as the head of the family. Phain agreed and met the rest of the family and his new estates and spent the rest of the night on his honeymoon. Budwar found that the church of Torag sent some dwarves to help restore the monastery and that more were on the way. Everyone else rested up knowing that they must confront the murderer at the misgivings.

Oathday Lamashan 10 around 9pm

The party headed out for the Misgivings, also known as Foxglive Manor, to confront the murderer. One of the dwarves came along part of the way to head to Magnimar to deliver a message to the Church of Torag about the broken seal of the ancient Runelord.

Oathday Lamashan 10 around 8am

After they turned off towards the Misgivings, the land seemed to change as if it were sick and diseased. Foxglove manor itself was in disrepairand built to hang over the cliff face with a view of the ocean. Approaching the house the noticed a well and used the magical eye they found on the necromancer at the seal, and discovered a tunnel leading out of the well. They decided to enter the house first.

The house looked to be ready to fall apart, the ceilings sagged, wood in many places rotted away, and mold stainsa everywhere. The doors themselves were hard to open. The group investigated the main floor, the upper floor and the attic. They encountered deadly flashes of scenes that involved other people. While they had the flashes they even believed they were that person. Each one usually involved death, disease and betrayal of loved ones. They all involved the last three generations of Foxgloves.

Other than these visions, and an occasional tumor filled rat, they only creature they encountered was a deadly undead creature that yelled "I'm coming for you Aldern!" Budwar and the rest managed to kill it before it got too far.

Session 17 - Final Battle at the Seal

Wealday Lamashan 9 around 6am

After resting the party returned to the stone plug. They found a handle that turns and moves the plug into the wall. Budwar cast a spell to improve his strength and after many tries managed to get it moving.

Beyond was a curved hallway that went both left and right. A sphere was slowly rolling along the floor when suddenly it shot out and exploded hurting Budwar. Entering the hallway they found that they were weightless and there was a slight current pushing them to the right. They also saw more of those spheres ahead and behind them. Moving slow enough not to get too close to any of them they searched for an entryway. The passageway seemed to curve in a big circle, and when they got to the opposite side of the entryway, they found anohter stone plug. Budwar managed to move this one and it revealed another passageway further inside the circle. They cautiously moved down this passageway and as the got to the opposite side of the inner circle, they found another stone plug. Budwar moved this and it revelead the inner chamber.

Inside the chamber was the seal that was partially holding the Runelord of Gluttony. The necromancer who freed him was holding a grisly book and reading to some Ghasts, and when they opened the plug, they attacked. The necromancer appeared to be missing his lower half and had constructed some sort of device that allowed him to fly.

The group were blocked off by the ghasts while the necromancer fly back and launched spells at them. Preacher was paralyzed by a ghast but was still able to channel and wound the ghasts. Orik and Budwar attacked the ghasts while Phain and Xantumal launched spells at the necromancer. Though Budwar was close to death, Preacher's heals kept him alive enough for the group to help kill the necromancer.

They studied the seal yet couldn't learn anything from it. Budwar vowed to send word to the Temple of Torag to get more help rebuilding this site and keeping it defended. Phain took the book the necromancer was reading, but couldn't indentify what it was without further investigation.

Session 16 - The Lower Vault

Toilsday Lamashan 8 around 6pm

Resting again in the same room they did before, the group headed back to the eyeballs. Phain crawled along the walls with his spiderclimb boots and found a hallway leading to a room with a statue. Preacher decided to join him and jumped into the eyeballs. As he started to moved through them, a nightmarish creature made of eyes and mouths grabs him and starts to pull him down. Touching the creatures Preacher used his holy power and puts it to sleep for a moment and then killed it with the special war razor he found from the kobolds. He commanded it to be on fire and continued to move through the eyeballs.

In the room with the statue of a holy warriors with the symbol of the Peacock Spirit, they find a hidden compartment in the back. Inside they find some magic potions and a Staff of Healing. Also there was an ancient map showing a location, but they were unable to discern where it was showing them since the towns and landmarks had changed.

Feeling confident they cleared out this level, they decided to head down the stairs and check the lower level of the vault. Immediately they felt a sense of dread and the air felt malignant. At the bottom of the stairs was a pool with a cauldron spewing out a noxious gas. The gas burned the skin of the group so Budwar and Phain investigated and after a few minutes managed to seal of the cauldron stopping the gas, but not after suffering from it a little.

Heading south they came into a room filled with gears, as well as a humanoid figure made from tallow. Budwar used his Golembane Scarab and detected a golem so the party attacked the figure with fire...Preacher with his flaming War Razor, Xantumal and Phain with fire spells, and Budwar used his hammer to pound it into pieces.

Playing with the gears, they learned it flipped a section of wall allowing people to get tot he other side. They realized it met up with another hallway so they followed that instead. In that room there was a Cleric of Pharasma trapped in a crystal. The cleric told Preacher that there was one of three existing seals at this location that held the Runelord of Greed in place. A Necromancer trying to tap into its power has broken the seal and that the Runelord is aware of that and has the power to control the necromancer to finding and breaking the other seals. As he was telling Preacher this a wraith burst forth from the seer and attacked. The group, however, had been ready for anything and managed to dispatch the incorporeal creature. The seer, after some healing, managed to finish telling them that he had sacrificed himself and his afterlife to keep the power of the seals and the Runelord in check. He asked the group destroy the necromancer and either reseal the vault or collapse the tunnels leading to it. Budwar agreed and they continued on.

They returned back to the hallway and headed south. Finding another room, they entered to find some undead. Preacher channeled and destroyed most of the undead and the group cleaned up the rest. Continuing on the came across another tomb of six sarcophagi of war generals in the Runelord's army. Out of nowhere, a creature attacked that was made up of many different body parts. It was identified as a Mohrg by Phain. Budwar used his smite ability on it and with the part's help destroyed the undead creature.

After finding some nice items on the corpse, they returned to the hallway and headed south. Another room revealed a mummy with flies and insects buzzing around his head in a cloud. Budwar, immune to the fear caused by the mummy, again used his smite ability to demolish the dangerous undead foe.

To the south they came across a stone plug blocking the way. The sense of dread caused by the seal was growing stronger, and the party decided to return upstairs to rest in the same area so they could be at full strength when confronting the necromancer.

Session 15 - The Vault Continued

Toilsday Lamashan 8 around 6am

Having used up most of their magic, the group decided to rest in the room with the traps after coming down since that had a crank to seal them off from whatever remained on that level. When they were done, the decided to head east from the room with the pillars. They came upon an oddly shaped room with a crank in one corner, and a turnstile in another. More of the undead sinspawn were in this room and attacked. Running at them on all fours caused Preacher to be knocked down, but the rest of the party came to his defense and as a group beat down the sinspawn.

Experimenting with the crank they discovered it moved the turnstile. Budwar checked out the other side and in it was a room with a pit that were filled with eyeballs, like the ones that were in the wall when they climbed down. They also turned and look at him when he came into the room. Deciding that they could come back, they decided to check out the rest of the level first.

Heading back west, they turned to the south passage and came to a room that had one wall blasted apart leading into a cavern with sounds of suffering coming from them. In the rubble they found a scarab that Phain identified as a Golembane Scarab that could detect golems nearby. Wanting to check out the cavern, they climbed over the rubble when a group of undead around the pit sensed they were there and attacked! Fighting on the rubble proved hard. Preacher was paralyzed by one ghast, and Phain and Orik took alot of wounds, but they managed to kill of all the undead. The party checked out the pit and saw that many farmers and lumberjacks had been dragged into the pit and were being changed into undead. Preacher channeled to kill them before it was too late, and Phain used his magical gauntlet that was found in the monastery above to use stone shape and cover the pit. Budwar vowed to get a Torag priest to cleanse the pit.

Having taken care of the pit they continued heading south. They camer into a room that appeared to have once been a laboratory. They starting to investigate when a hidden undead creature attacked. Budwar used his smite ability on the creature and soon killed it. They took some mysterious liquid with them and decided they needed to rest soon, but wanted to discover what was in the locked room they had avoided so far.

Open the door there was a mummy with it eyes sewn shut and carrying a head of a dwarf in a cage. Shaking off a paralyzing fear, they attacked the mummy. Budwar once again used his holy smiting ability and soon brought down the creature with the help of the rest of the group. Phain identified the cage as a magic device that allowed someone ask three questions a day of a head int he cage. They also deduced that the head belonged to the dwarven corpse found in the other room. They also found a black rod with a gaunt man that did damage to a foe and gave temporary health to the wielder.

Session 14 - Return to the Dwarven Monastery

Moonday Lamashan 7 Around 6 PM

After resting the group approached the Dwarven Monastery. I voice called out wishing to talk to them and it was the wolf with human hands. The wolf said he used to be an animal companion to a druid of Erastil. After the druid died he protected the forest until a weird negative energy blast twisted his body. He fears losing his mind to the transformation and asked the party to investigate under the monastery. They agreed since they were going to do this anyways.

Inside the monastery all the workers had been slaughtered. Nothing was desecrated though. They explored the lower levels and discovered the spot of a cave-in where they found two dead kobolds and had been attacked by shadows had been cleared out. There was a hole that lead down to another level. Phain used his spider slippers to investigate. He found the the ten foot opening widen to over a sixty foot wide room that was filled with water below a passageway to the south. The walls also had strange eyeballs in the cracks of the walls. He had a rope secured in the upper level and began to secure a rope below when some undead crawled out of the water and attacked. Risking his life he finished securing the rope and called out that he was under attack. Fighting for his life while the rest of the party made it down the rope, he was almost dead when the paladin made it to the passageway and the druid, who had shape changed into a giant eagle, arrived with Hogie. Phain maneuvered past the undead to safety while the rest of the group took the undead out.

Heading south down the passage way, the group came to another room. Being wary of traps, Phain searched but didn't find any traps. Unfortunately the room was trapped. As the made their way in bladed pendulums swung out of the walls while spears fired from statues on the other side of the room. Then four creatures that resembled the creatures from underneath Sandpoint ran out from behind the statues and attacked. One hit Preacher so hard that he fell down. The party was handling these creatures fine until two more undead came out from the statues and attacked. These were foul smelling and they knew they were ghasts. One of the ghasts hit Phain and then he couldn't move. Orik and Budwar came to help and soon had all the undead defeated. The checked out the statues and Phain identified them as the Runelord of Gluttony.

Heading into the next room to the south, they found an oddly shaped room which had an inner chamber inside the larger chamber. As they made their way around to investigate the inner chamber, they found multiple pillars filled with information on Thasillonia, specifically about the Runelord of Greed's territory, and also they found a swarven corpse that was flopping around on the floor. Phain zapped it with a ray of frost when a ghostly figure came out of the floor and attacked. Preacher identified it as a mind wraith, a wraith that drains your mind. Attacking it carefully they managed to dispatch it without injury. Phain studied the pillar as he is always interested in learning about Thasillonia.

The group continued to move to the south and they came upon a room with a Runelord statue in the middle of the room. In each corner was a crawl space with a skeleton trapped behind bars. Wary of the skeletons attacking, but the true enemy were two shadowy creatures from behind the door to the south. Having fought these many times, they defeated the undead and discovered that there were stairs leading down here.

Session 13 - Azlanti Graveyard

Sunday Lamashan 6 Around 6 PM

After clearing out the lumber camp, the group needed to rest before heading to the Azlanti graveyard to confront the returned King Merlokrep and his forces. Orik took Delek back to Sandpoint. As they rested, the ground began to shake and a dinosaur skeleton burst forth from below the ground. The druid rooted the monster in place by soften the ground with a spell and then hardening it once it sank. The party then attacked it with ranged weapons until it went down. Having their rest interrupted, they set up camp again and rested. Orik returned before they finished and then they set off to the graveyard.

Moonday Lamashan 7 Around 6 AM

They followed tracks to the graveyard and came upon two huge disks that overlapped. They had weird symbols, some partially faded that Phain couldn't make out. They continued to the burial mound where they found a section was blasted out. At that spot, two kobolds lay dead. Phain checked out theentrence and found it had a magical trap. Before he could do anything about it, two shadowy figures rose out of the dead kobold bodies and attacked. The group having fought these before took care of them without too much problem. During the combat Phain had to jump through the magical ward and managed to not get cursed. He disabled the ward and the group continued inside.

The next room had fountains in every corner, but one of the was destroyed. Being paranoid of more traps, Phain started to check out the room when three water elementals appeared out of the water. After dispatching the planar creatures, they smashed the fountains to make sure no more appeared.

The next room contained murals of things in the air, when something that appeared to be part of the mural, but wasn't came down and attacked. It was made mostly of air, yet had wings and claws. The group ganged up on it and beat it down until it dissipated.

Here they decided to head north and check out a burial room. Having a bad feeling about the room Budwar used his detect evil ability and discovered there was alot of evil in the room. Assuming that there was undead here, Preacher walked to the middle of the room and channeled the energy of Pharasma while five undead creatures burst forth from their sarcophagi. Fighting in tight quarters made this fight difficult, but the group with two people strong in their faith managed to dispatch the foul undead. In the sixth sarcophagus, the corpse in their had stabbed itself with its sword which radiated magic. Phain indentified it and discovered it was a powerful sword against undead. Orik volunteered to use it while they faced undead.

Heading back to the mural room they went south and found that chamber partially caved in. Budwar again detected evil and before he could do anything, a creature moved through solid rock and attacked. Orik came over and helped with his new sword slaying the ghostly creature.

The next room was filled with kobold zombies and Preacher managed to take out more than half of them right away by channeling while the rest of the group cleaned up. Heading east they finally found King Merlokrep.

Preacher rushed one of the two undead bodyguards while the King sent his other bodyguard to clog up the entry way. The king wanted his crown back and started sending magical missiles slamming into Phain. Budwar cleared out the undead bodyguard in front of him while Preacher took out the bodyguard attacking him. Soon the king was surrounded and with a holy smite from Budwar was killed once again, this time forever.

They found a magical gem in Merlokrep's eye and a magical sceptre that Phain couldn't indentify. They decided to head to the Dwarven Monestary to see what could have slaughtered all the workers and brought Merlokrep back from the dead.

Session 12 - Everything Happens at Once

Sunday Lamashan 6

They were awoken to a panicked knock by one of the workers that was helping restore the dwarven monastery that the party cleared out. Budwar talked with him and discovered that everyone working there was dead. He wasn't at work the previous day and discovered the bodies when he returned. The group got ready to ride out there when the Sheriff asked them to check out a farmstead. Farmer Grump told them that they had seem scarecrows walking in the night. A group of them checked out the Hambley farm and found the whole family dead and there were things that looked like corpses, but fed like starving animals. Since the farm wasn't too far out of the way they decided to check that out first.

When they got to the farm the discovered there were a lot of scarecrows. They cautiously checked out a few as the approached the farm. A couple were normal, but two were actually ghouls and attacked, and another was a man bound up like a scarecrow and was suffering from ghoul fever. Preacher cured him, but the man was unconscious. Once at the farm the checked out the barn first. Inside were six ghouls that looked like they once were a woman and children farmers. Also there was a dread ghoul in the back that seemed to be able to command them. Budwar held off most of them while the rest of the party helped eliminate them. They found a key on the neck of the dread ghoul and identified the noble symbol on it to be from the Foxglove estate. Phain remembered that the Foxglove estate was also called the Misgivings, which was mentioned by Grayst.

They searched the house next and found Farmer Hambley dead on the table with the Sihedron Rune carved on his chest. He also had a note pinned to his shirt that said “I fear you. I hate you. You must fear and hate me as well. You may unmask me, so I must unmask you first.”

Vowing to go the Foxglove manor and get to the bottom of it, but still having to go to investigate the Dwarven Monestary they headed out. One getting closer to the monastery they noticed a wolf that was trying to get their attention and have them follow it. They discovered the wolf's track looked like human hands. It lead them to the lumber camp where Delek worked and was taken by the kobolds. Something here was wrong. The camp was partially destroyed and looked like another attack happened. Phain starting to climb the tower while Budwar checked the stables. Budwar found Delek hanging from hooks and chain and started to get him down when a log pile rolled out and destroyed the tower and the stables wehre Budwar was. An undead kobold appeared from atop the lumbar and another one appeared from where the twoer was. And soon another kobold druid as well as other kobolds attacked. After a long fought battle, the party managed to defeat them. Investigating the rest of the camp they found a huge beetle, insect swarms, and a building full of kobold zombies.

In the office they found some kobolds that told the party they were hiding there from the druid and the undead kobolds. Also that they still serve King Merlokrep who came back from from the big beyond filled with hatred of those who killed him. Merlokrep was waiting for them in the nearby graveyard. While investigating the rest of the camp, Orik said the kobolds broke free and he had to kill them.

Delek after being healed told them that many of the lumberjack had been dragged off alive to the graveyard. The party realized they would need to rest first before heading there.

Session 11 - To Magnimar and Back

Sunday Rova 16

When the party came back they were told someone who really stunk, broke into their room. She cleaned and freshened it up, but couldn't find anything missing. Budwar thought that maybe they stole his hairbrush.

Moonday Rova 17 Through Starday Rova 28

After a day of rest the group leaves for Magnimar to sell equipment and look to spend some of their money on new equipment. Shalelu comes along and sticks close to the druid. Ameiko comes along as well, saying she is looking to hire some new workers in Magnimar to replace the ones killed by her brother. They arrive in Magnimar late the next day. On Fireday the 20th the druid and Shelelu leave on the boat with some others that seem less than savory. The rest of the group go to the Golemworks to purchase and upgrade some magic items.

On Starday 21 Phain was visiting some seedy local establishments when he notices Orik, the man who left Thistletop. He followed him into a tavern and after observing him for awhile sits down with him. He discovers Orik has been drinking away his money from Thistletop. He was thinking of leaving Magnimar because of a string of murders that was happening in the city. Things were being kept quiet by the city guard as much as possible, but the word was getting out. Phain asked Orik to work for him and Orik accepted. Preacher found out similar information while checking out the boneyard in Magnimar.

On Moonday they decided to visit Justice Ironbriar, who the Sheriff had mentioned had helped him get a few men when the mayor refused. Ironbriar has heard about the group from Sheriff Hemlock and asked how he could help them. Ironbriar gives them some information about the victims, they were all merchants and they had a strange symbol scratched into their chest. After describing it, they ask him if it looked like Phain's amulet that he got off of Nualia. He confirmed that it was. They asked if they could help, but Ironbriar assured that they had it under control and agreed to enlist their aid if it they needed more help.

After a couple more days in town, Ameiko was ready to return to Sandpoint with her new workers. Arriving the following day back in Sandpoint, the group continued to relax.

Fireday Lamashan 4

The Sheriff takes them aside and tells them that some murders are beginning to happen again. There was also a note addresses to Budwar saying "We have spoken of this before, my master. Now it begins. Join the Pack and it will end." At the sawmill, there were two dead bodies, one female and one male, both had the Sihedron symbol carved on their chest. The male was the sawmill owner, the female unrecognizable. Preacher spoke with the dead to the sawmill owner, and discovered the last thing he remembered was smelling something awful. Remembering someone who stunk broke into their room, that searched and found humanoid tracks leading to the river.

Starday Lamashan 5

The Sheriff told them that a previous murder had happened and only the bodyguard of three merchants survived, though he was submitted to a sanatorium. The sheriff said they were as much con men as merchants and wasn't surprised to find them dead, but they had that symbol carved into their chests that seemed more than just revenge. He hands them a note found near the body that said

They checked out the location of the attack and didn't find too much evidence so they decided to head to the sanatorium. The doctor in charge seemed to want to experiment on his patients more than help them. Grayst, the bodyguard seemed to just keep muttering "too many teeth" and "The Skinsaw Man is coming". Preacher checked him out and discovered that Grayst had Ghoul Fever. Once Budwar got close enough, Grayst told him that the Skinsaw Man left Budwar a message and it was “He said you should come to the Misgivings soon, to meet the Pack, for they have something wonderful to show you.” After that Grayst became a should and broke out of his straight jacket and attacked. Phain downed him with no problem. They headed back into town and discovered that the druid had come back. He didn't go into any detail on what he did.

Interlude

So ends the first part of the "Rise of the Runelords" adventure path called "Burnt Offerings". At this point, most of the party is 4th or 5th level. Gen Con is coming up and with it comes the final Pathfinder rules. After a two week break, we will resume playing and convert the characters to those rules.

The group found notes and a journal in Nualia's chamber. Here is a rundown of those notes for reference.

Nualia's Notes

The notes outline her plans to send an army of goblins against Sandpoint and to burn the town to the ground, not only to offer it all as a burnt offering to Lamashtu in hopes of being made a half-fiend, but to fuel the runewell in the catacombs below.

The notes go on to detail how to cause sinspawn to manifest from the runewell, and that if one were to overextend the runewell’s stores, it would be deactivated. Nualia wasn’t sure how to reactivate it, and several times stresses that the runewell shouldn’t be used much until after Sandpoint is razed and the deaths of hundreds of angry citizens and goblins have refilled the well.

Nualia's journals and notes were pieced together to find out a little of her story.

A foundling raised by Sandpoint’s religious leader, a man named Ezakien Tobyn, Nualia’s childhood was lonely and sad. Her unearthly beauty made the other children either jealous or shy, and many of them took to playing cruel jokes on her. The adults in town weren’t much better, many of the superstitious Varisians viewed Nualia as blessed by Desna, a sort of “reverse deformity.” Rumors that her touch or proximity could cure warts and rashes, that locks of her hair brewed into tea could increase fertility, and that her voice could drive out evil spirits led to endless awkward and humiliating requests over the years. Nualia felt more like a freak than a young girl by the time she came of age, so when Delek Viskanta began to court her, she practically fell into his arms in gratitdue.

Knowing that her father wouldn’t approve of a relationship with a Varisian because he wanted her to remain pure so that she could join one of the prestigious Windsong Abbey convents, they kept the affair secret. They met many times in hidden places, a favorite being an abandoned smuggler’s tunnel under town that Delek had discovered as a child. Before long, Nualia realized she was pregnant. When she told Delek, he revealed his true colors and, after calling her a slut and a harlot, fled Sandpoint rather than face her father’s wrath. Nualia’s shock quickly turned to rage, yet she had nowhere to vent her anger. She bottled it up, and when her father discovered her delicate condition, his reaction to her indescretions only furthered her shame and anger. He forbade her to leave the church, lectured her nightly, and made her pray to Desna for forigeness. In so doing, he nurtured her growing hate.

One night when she was about seven months pregnant, and she flew into a frenzy. She miscarried her child later that night, a child whose monstrously deformed shape she only glimpsed before the midwives stole it away to burn it in secret. The double shock of losing a child and the realization she had been carrying a fiend in her belly for seven months was too much. Nualia fell into a coma.

As Nualia slept, she dreamed unhealthy dreams. Fueled by wrath and the taint of Lamashtu, Nualia became further obsessed with the cruel demon goddess and the conviction that her wretched life was inflicted on her by those around her. She came to see her angelic heritage as a curse, and the demon-sent dreams showed her how to expunge this taint from her body and soul, replacing it with chaos and cruelty. When she finally woke, Nualia was someone new, someone who didn’t flinch at what Lamashtu asked of her. She jammed her father’s door shut as he slept, lit the church on fire, and fled Sandpoint.

The locals assumed Nualia had burned in the fire, a tragedy made all the worse by the death of Father Tobyn as well. Yet Nualia lived. She fled to Magnimar, where she enlisted the aid of a group of killers known as the Skinsaw Men. Seeing a kindred spirit in the tortured woman, the mysterious leader of the Skinsaw Men gave Nualia a medallion bearing a carving of a seven-pointed star called a “Sihedron medallion.” Nualia learned that she had a larger role to play, and that her dreams were a map to her destiny. Taking the advice to heart, Nualia returned to Sandpoint, and found herself drawn to the brick wall in the smuggler’s tunnels where she and Delek had conceived her deformed child. Nualia bashed down the wall, and in so doing, discovered the Catacombs of Wrath and the quasit Erylium, also a follower of Lamashtu. For many months, Nualia studied under Erylium’s tutelage. During this time, Nualia received another vision from Lamashtu—a vision of a monstrous goblin wolf imprisoned in a tiny room. In Nualia’s dreams, she learned that this creature, a barghest named Malfeshnekor, was also one of Lamashtu’s chosen. If she could find him and free him, he would not only help her achieve her vengeance against the town of Sandpoint, but he would be the key in cleansing her body of what she had come to see as her “celestial taint.” Nualia wanted to be one of Lamashtu’s children now. She wanted to become a monster herself.

Session 10 - Clearing Thistletop

Starday Rova 14 Around 8PM

The group decided to rest in a shed out in the courtyard, that way the horse may alert them in case anyone passes through. Near the end of their resting, Phain hears the horse stir and then someone running through the courtyard closing a door. He follows the person out and hits him with a magic missile from the wand as the man crosses the rope bridge. He says his name is Orik and was hired as a bodyguard for Nualia. While the money was good, and he hasn't actually had to do anything so far, he has realized he was over his head for some time. He had wanted to leave, but was afraid they would kill him if he tried. When he discovered everyone was dead on the lower level, he grabbed his stuff and decided it was his chance. Phain allowed him to leave making him promise to do make up for the wrongs he had done.

Sunday Rova 15 Around 8AM

After they finished resting the went back down the stairs and continued to explore. The first room they went to was a Shrine of Lamashtu. When Budwar went in to smash the altar, two demon dogs came from the ceiling and bit him and knocked him down. The rest of the group came in to fight, preacher got hit and knocked down. Budwar called upon Torag and landed a mighty blow on one of the dogs, while Phain hit one, and while his gauntlet did nothing to it, his spells managed to damage it. Budwar finished his off while Xantumal killed the other. Budwar approached the shrine and started to wail on it with his adamantine hammer until the altar broke apart.

Searching the rest of the level, they found a prison cell area, and a bunch of sleeping rooms that were all empty. At this point they decided to try the stairs behind the secret door and head down.

As they came down the stairs, two things stuck out to them. First is that the whole level was at an angle, sloping up to the east. The second was that the air on this level was cool and refreshing, despite being two levels down and not open to the outside.

After finding a room with some statues of Karzoug, the Runelord of Greed, the continued down a corridor where there was a smooth spot on the floor. Suspecting a trap, Phain searched but couldn't fins anything to suggest a trap. Budwar decided to move on, but there was indeed a trap, two portcullis drop down and two statues carrying glaives would swing in the spot where someone would stand, then a pit trap would open up and close. Luckily, Budwar was ready for something to happen and jumped ahead before the portcullis came down. Phain used his Spider Climb boots to walk along the ceiling and avoid the trap, but as he got to the other side a door opened up and a woman with a demon claw hand and a scarred midriff was there....Nualia.

She swung a huge bastard sword and hit Budwar. Budwar reacted and while calling upon Torag to assist him in battle, landed a mighty blow with both his Hammer and Shield. Unfortunately Nualia herself responded in kind with a massive hit with her claw, dropping Budwar to the ground. Meanwhile Phain was being kept busy by another one of the demon dogs that could fly so it was fighting Phain at the ceiling. Xantumal, having seen Budwar fall, lept over the trapped area in the hall and flung some flame at Nualia and hit. Barely able to stand, Nualia called to Lamashtu for aid and slammed her sword and her claw onto Xantumal. Where the claw hit him, Xantumal started to get deformed and grew a vestigial arm from that area. Phain trying to finish her off, tried to maneuver but somehow failed and fell to the trapped spot. Quickly he jumped out of the way. Still wielding fire, Xantumal hit Nualia with it and she fell dead. While Phain finished off the demon dog, Xantumal touched Budwar stopping the bleeding and keeping him alive.

Preacher decided to jump over the trap and help heal Budwar, but couldn't quite make it and landed on the trap, getting hit by two glaives and falling in the pit. Xantumal made sure Nualia was dead, so Preacher channeled holy energy and healed Budwar's wounds. Phain examined the trapped area and finally found how to disable it, rescuing Preacher from the pit. On Nualia they found a magic medallian with the seven pointed star on it. Phain decided to examine and study it later. They also found a bunch of notes and a journal detailing her life and the plans for Sandpoint.

Heading south from this room, they found a room where there was a pillar made of coins. Studying it Phain discovered it glowed with illusion magic, but couldn't find out in what way. They decided to move on and found the Runelords' crypt. In it were three shadowy creatures, much like what they fought in the kobold caverns.

After killing those and searching the room, they headed back to the gold coin pillar. After trying multiple things, Xantumal noticed there were two small slits, one on each side of the pillar. They put in a gold coin in each and the pillar lowered to the floor.

In the chamber beyond were three doors. Behind the first door was a room with surgical equipment, plus they found a disk with a handle on one side, and blades and grooves on the other. Not knowing what it could be used for they kept it and moved on. To the door to the north they heard talking. Busting down the door they dsicovered it was an illusion of the Runelord Karzoug talking to someone and the words were looping. A door remained to the south, so they went there and figured out that the disk they found earlier was a key. The used it and opened the door.

Inside there was a fire pit. Budwar enetered and was attacked by a large dog. Seeming resistant to some of their blows they fought on eventually wearing it down enough and killing it. Examining it, they discovered it was some sort of planar creature. Inside was a secret door with a box of sand with a magic ring inside of it, shaped like the seven pointed star. When used, it created a magic force shield.

Feeling like they might have missed something, they spent time searching all the rooms. Back in the crypt they found a secret door. Following the passage way they came to a room that was collapsing and slowly filling with water. Inside was a helm sized for a giant that was over five feet across. Phain detected magic and swam to get it, and a monstrous crab came out of the helmet and attacked. Despite being bruised, battered and out of spells, they killed off the crab and found some money and a magical amulet.

They finished searching the lower level and found no more secret doors. They decided before heading back to Sandpoint they would search the rest of the complex. First however would be rest.

Moonday Rova 16 Around Midnight

After resting the spent the rest of the time searching the remaining underground level and the stockade. In the stockade behind the latrine they found a secret door. Behind it was a small room with a chest. Inside was the goblin's accumulated wealth. After searching the rest of the complex and finding nothing else of value, they headed back to Sandpoint for some deserved rest.

Session 9 - Exploring Thistletop

Starday Rova 14 Around 4PM

Standing outside the doors leading into the stockade on Thistletop the group discovered it was barricaded from the inside. Xantumal cast a spell and touched the door causing the wooden door to change shape and allowing them to open the door. Waiting inside were a group of goblins. They dispatched them without a problem. The room was a trophy room filled with stuffed farm animals and some Harpy wings.

Heading left they found a store room and a in the western tower two more goblins. Past that they discovered a courtyard with some goblin dogs and decided to come back to them. Heading north from the trophy room they found the goblin Warchief Ripnugget. Budwar charged Ripnugget while eveyone else was surprised by hidden goblin commandos. Depsite being outnumbered, the party was successful in killing off their foes.

Heading back to the courtyard they killed off the goblin dogs and found a horse locked into a shed. Xantumal calmed the horse down and they fed it some food. Leaving it to wander the courtyard the continued on. They found another storeroom and a toilet area as well as a way down to a lower level.

Heading below, they found a goblin nursary and a second room with goblin women cavorting with a bugbear. They guessed this was the bugbear Ranger Bruthazmus. The bugbear put up a good fight for not having any armor on and not being prepared for a fight, but was no match for the party. They let the goblin women live, and they left the island right away.

Moving on, they found another room that looked like a work area. That room lead to another area open to the outside that contained a stange creature that looked like a squid. It had two tentacles that tried to grab people and throw them off the edge.

After killing it, they continued exploring the rooms. After going through a couple empty ones, Budwar opened a door and was greeted by a punch and a bolt of fire. They realized they had finally found Tsuto. Budwar was zapped with fire again by a woman in the room and was really hurting. Preacher stepped up and healed some of the burns. Quickly Tsuto went down, and the woman became really angry and threw another spell at the Paladin who suddenly lost alot of strength. Now that Tsuto wasn't blocking the door, everyone surrounded the wizard and killed her.

Searching the room, they found a secret door with some stairs heading down. Having run out of spells and feeling a little battered, the group decided they should find a place and rest before heading any farther.

Session 8 - Approaching Thistletop

Wealday Rova 11 Around 8PM

Returning to Sandpoint they took Delek to the Cathedral to get help from Father Zantus. Having had a rough two days the group retired to their rooms.

Oathday Rova 12

After resting the night the group checked in on Delek and went about appraising the loot they had acquired so far. After deciding that any items of value that have been used by party members did not count as portions of the split loot, they went to some respective town vendors to get what value they could. They decided to hold on to some of the more mundane magic items until such time as they could make a trip to a larger city (like Magnimar) so as to get a better value.

After picking up his new cloak, Phain spent some time studying some of the more unusual magic items they found. The short spear that the Kobold King had wielded and called "Man Sticker" was identified as a weapon dedicated to killing humans. The War Blade that was being used by Preacher gained power attributes when used to kill a helpless foe. Three things could happen, the blade would catch on fire and burning anyone cut by it, a portion of the lifeforce would be transferred to the wielder curing most ailments, or the ability to gain insight from a higher power. Phain also researched the gauntlet but was still unable to quite grasp what it did, though it was currently on his hand and it looked like a large black rock with a claw.

The sheriff was back in town but wanted to give the group time to fully rest and recover so he told them they would meet and talk the next day.

Fireday Rova 13

The party met with the sheriff the next day where he informed them that his trip to Magnimar was basically a waste of time. The Mayor of Magnimar, Haldmeer Grobaras only cares about his own interests and wasn't swayed about news of the goblins organizing. The Sheriff however knows a powerful Justice by the name of Ironbriar who was able to convince the Mayor with the help of the mayor's assistant to give the sheriff a couple very green soldiers that had probably never held a sword before.

As the day was closing, a couple of merchants came into town telling of being attacked on the road to Sandpoint by some goblins and a half-elf. The party recognized his description as Tsuto, Ameiko's brother that had escaped them at the Glassworks. The merchants offered the group 250 gold if they could find and return their prize winning horse that was stolen. As it was approaching dark, the party decided to wait until the next day. Shalelu had to leave to do scouting, but she gave directions on how to get there.

Starday Rova 14

The party headed out to Thistletop. Soon they came upon the brambles that Shalelu described as the goblins outer defenses of Thistletop. Xantumal as a druid was one with nature and thus was not hindered at all by the overgrowth and was able to spot the hidden tunnels.

On the other end of the small tunnels, there was an area almost like a complex. The walls and ceilings were made of brambles but otherwise was like a complex. Searching this complex they came across some scrawny, underfed goblins and a hole leading down into some sort of cavern. As they worked their way through the complex, they found a bridge leading to the island where the goblins lived. Before they crossed however there was one more area to check out.

That area however contained a large Firepelt, an animal that resembled a cougar, and a goblin that could throw fire and move through the walls like they weren't there. The group had no answer for him until Xantumal crossed through the walls and attacked him there until the goblin was dead. The goblin was a fierce opponent, but Xantumal had the healing forces of Preacher and Budwar behind him.

The group then needed to cross the bridge. Feeling uneasy about the rope bridge, they decided to have Phain crawl under the bridge with his magical slippers. He dragged across a rope and secured it on the other end. The each party member crossed one at a time until they all made it across.

Now on the island they were at the goblin stockade on Thistletop. The doors were locked, the group thought about how to enter.

Session 7 - Kobold lair Concluded

Wealday Rova 11 - Around 2PM

Continuing up the tunnel to the north they came upon an impressive kobold on a throne, King Merlokrep himself. He congratulated them himself and invited them to dine with him, but they refused. The battle began with Preacher casting a spell increasing Budwar's strength and Phain shooting a bolt of frost hitting the king. Merlokrep cast a spell at Phain which was ineffective. One of two of Merlokrep's flunkies was killed by Budwar, Xantumal and Hogie. Phain followed up on his last attack by moving in a dealing a devastating blow with a powerful punch fueled by his shocking grasp spell, but the king still stood. Merlokrep tried to impale Phain with his shortspear that he called "Man Sticker" but to no avail. Budwar finished him off with a powerful smite attack.

Xantumal took the king's weapon while Phain took his crown. The crown helped boost Phain's magical skills while the spear became a powerful weapon in the hands of the druid when used against any human.

Moving to the east they found the king's bed chamber. In it a beautiful kobold (for a kobold)was there willing to become one of their consorts. When they all refused she attacked but was quickly killed.

Continuing to the east the found Delek on an altar. Also in the room was a very old kobold that looked almost dead. He sent his minions to attack the group while casting spells. He summoned a swarm of rats, but the party quickly took them out as well as one of the minions. The kobold didn't last long as the party cornered him. One of the minions however fought bravely and lasted longer than both the Shaman and his king, but in the end he joined Pharasma like the rest of the kobolds.

The weapon the old kobold was using was a war razor that held powerful magic, but had to be activated by killing a helpless victim. One power allowed the blade to burn with fire, another power had a healing aspect, while the third power allowed the mind to travel to spy on another or to ask the gods important questions needing answers.

Delek was in bad shape and some healing spells repaired his wounds, but Delek was in some state of shock. He was willing to follow along, but otherwsie was unresponsive.

Backtracking their steps, they decided to check the remaining tunnels and found a nursery. Preacher killed the matron as well as some of the young kobolds sending their souls to Pharasma, but Budwar pulled him away before finishing them all off. Budwar vowed to either find a living kobold to take care of them, or come back and move them where maybe someone could raise them properly.

At this point the lower level was cleared of all creatures, so they decided to investigate the rest of the first level. They found a pair of shocker lizards in one room and a grick in another. There were some trapped rooms including a tilting room with killer statues and a magnetic room with two vargouiles in it that sapped strength with poisonous bites. The major find was a skeleton with a black gauntlet that contained some special properties. Some more research needed to be done to completely discover it's secrets.

So with everything cleared out, the group decided to head back to Sandpoint, bring back Delek for care, and get some rest.

Session 6 - Kobold Lair Continued

Wealday Rova 11 - Around 2AM

After finishing off the kobolds, the group decided to investigate a natural tunnel in the previous room. As they moved down the tunnel, it started to get more smokey and hot. From out of the smoke a hellhound appeared and attacked. Budwar invoked Torag and smote the foul beast. As the continued down the hallway the smoke got worse and they were attacked by a dwarven figure wrapped in chains. On those chains were faces that were silently screaming. One of the chains wrapped around Phain while the creature attacked Budwar. With a combined effort they slew their undead foe before Phain succumbed to the constricting of the chain. Budwar took the adamantine hammer as a weapon and used it to destroy the horrid chain.

They also found a crevasse that they believed lead them closer to their goal of rescuing Delek from being sacrificed. Unfortunately Xantumal slipped when trying to climb and fell to the ground below. A dire bat swooped out and attacked him while a gargoyle also appeared. After Preacher and Budwar also fell down when attempting to climb down, the beaten up party managed to kill off both the Bat and the gargoyle.

They climb back up the rope Phain threw down and checked out one more room in the upper level. It appeared to be a barracks of some sort. When checking the beds, 5 stirges swooped down and attached themselves. When they were done swatting the pesky stirges, they were tired, beat up and low on blood so they decided to rest.

Wealday Rova 11 - Around 11AM

The party decided to continue in the lower levels to find Delek and then they could return to clear out the rest of the creatures. After almost everyone falling down when climbing down the crevasse, they decided to take the elevator they found previously. It appeared to be able to hold two people at a time, but when they started to lower it, it broke apart. Preacher managed to grab ahold of something to stop from falling, but Budwar fell about 30 feet. Waiting for him down below were over a dozen kobolds. Outnumbered, but heavily armored and wielding "Glintaxe"'s items, the kobolds were unable to take advantage. Preacher decided to leap down to help. Phain take out his trusty rope and climbed down, while Xantumal rigged up a way to carry his wolf down moments later.

The group were killing off the kobolds, but two leader kobolds in the back, shouted down the hallway for reinforcements. Phain revealed that he had a knack for learning languages and had picked up how to speak their language since being there. Since he understood them, he positioned himself to attack the two leaders. He took out one, but the kobold were using a centipede poison that was slowing Phain down. Also more kobold were coming down the tunnels. Fortunately though, the original kobolds were thinned out and the rest of the group had come over to help. Unfortunately, one bigger kobold who came down one of the tunnels hit Hogie with a devastating blow knocking the wolf unconscious. This kobold was no match for the group as a whole and soon went down to their attacks.

After Preacher and Budwar helped heal Hogie and the rest of the group, they pushed onward. The came to a cavern that was being mined, then found a second cavern that had another bigger kobold and two frog like creatures. The party was taking no chances after the pick weilding kobold who took out Hogie, and quickly dispatched the kobold in this area.

Moving on they came to an intersection in the tunnels and chose to go right. They came to a dead end where the tunnel was collapsed. Two dead kobolds with no signs of injury were here along with something written in the kobold's language. Phain translated it saying it said "“Darky-dark below, and whispers soft and low. Evil lurks, its lip less mouth smirks. Do not go! Only death below!” After that 3 shadowy figures came out of the rock and attacked! Preacher channeled holy energy causing damage to the three shadows and making one flee. Avoiding the touch of the the creatures, the group managed to "kill" off the shadows.
